While freedom is deeply rooted in authority, it takes belief and understanding to work in the light of it. Employing the use of Fire, razorblade and sand paper, Alex Idoko in this piece Freedom’s Rhythm captures not only the idea of one finally breaking free, it captures one’s total surrender to authority that would in return command the freedom desired. It also shows the flow and the impact power has from it’s source to it’s destination when decrees are made. The portrait showcases a bound woman who has finally decided to rely on a stronger external force “the crown” which signifies royalty and authority to help her out of her predicament you will notice the bruises on her shoulder and feet showing previous struggle to break free on her own accord. While the Crown is above her head like a covering, it is gradually flowing on her body like a volcano and setting her free this flow represent a sent word or decree that has in it the power to break chains and set pace. Alex Idoko in this piece compels viewers to understand that not all battles can be won by just depending on self alone. Because, time and time again there would be battle unseen that requires total surrender to higher powers in order to emerge victorious.
